  • Vocabulary (expressions with name): Student’s book, page 35, activities 9 and 10.
  • Game: kahoot (unit 3) + quizlet (vocabulary)
  • Practice: Read the story ‘A small mistake’ and place the words: title, exposition, action, resolution. Identify story elements, plots diagram, narrative tenses, time sequencers, linkers, adjectives and adverbs. 

Writing practice:

  1. Choose one of the sentences to start your short story (100-120 words):
  • “It was midnight when the phone rang.”
  • “We had been driving for hours when we saw the sign for a small hotel and decided to stop.”
  • It was getting dark and I was completely lost.”
  • “Tim felt angry as he got off the train.”
  • As Victoria entered the room, she couldn’t believe her eyes!
  1. BEFORE WRITING!
  • Plan your story (Characters? Place? Time? Main conflict? Topic? What is it about?)
  • Remember to use TIME EMPRESSIONS to define the order of the events in your story.
  • Remember to use CONNECTORS to make your story more fluent.
  • Remember to use ADJECTIVES (to describe nouns) and ADVERBS (to describe verbs)
  • Remember to use expressions to create SUSPENSE when getting into the climax!
  • If you include DIALOGUE, remember to use “…”
  • Be careful with the use of NARRATIVE TENSES!
  • Remember to divide your story into paragraphs!
  1. AFTER WRITING!
  • Have you included a title?
  • Have you started your story with the sentence given in the instructions?
  • Have you got a WHO? WHAT? WHERE? WHEN? And HOW?
  • Has your story got a conflict? And a resolution?
  • Have you used time expressions, e.g. before, during, after, when, while, until, first, then, next, immediately, as soon as, finally, in the end, etc?
  • Have you used a variety of narrative tenses: past simple for events, past continuous to describe the background, and past perfect simple or continuous for things that happened before something else?
  • Have you used adjectives and adverbs to describe the scene, people, etc?
  • Have you divided your story into paragraphs?
  • Have you included dialogue?
  • Have you written 100-120 words?
